Five residents from Odisha are currently untraceable following destructive flash floods in Nepal, bringing the total count of missing persons from the Indian state to five. The latest cases involve three individuals from Sarla village in Bargarh district: Gunnam Jayakrishna, who was employed at a local hydroelectric project, alongside Gunnam Sai Bindu Kumari and her two-year-old daughter. Baragada Collector Aditya Goyal confirmed their status, adding that local officials have alerted the Odisha state government to coordinate rescue efforts with relevant authorities.
This development follows an earlier report regarding a married couple from Khordha district, Sandeep Mohapatra and Siddharthi Kumari Sahu. The couple, who have resided in Australia since 2018, landed in Nepal on August 22 before losing all mobile phone connectivity after the deluge. Odisha officials gathered their details through Sandeep's sister and shared the information with the Ministry of External Affairs. Meanwhile, a 22-year-old woman from Mayurbhanj district, Kulsum Nigara, who was previously unaccounted for, has been confirmed safe.
The catastrophe, driven by the swelling Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river networks, has caused extensive destruction across Nepal, damaging highways, bridges, and power infrastructure. Torrential waters and massive mudslides have claimed at least 472 lives, with over 1,500 people remaining missing. Nepal's Foreign Minister confirmed that approximately 300 Indian citizens are among those untraced, while search and relief operations continue in the affected areas.
