A deadly calamity occurred in the capital city of Conakry, Guinea, early on Sunday morning after a massive pile of garbage unexpectedly caved in following severe weather conditions. Downpours in the region triggered the collapse of a huge waste heap, leading to a tragic loss of life and multiple casualties in the surrounding locality.
The tragedy took place at Dar Es Salam, which stands as the largest landfill site operating in Conakry. Heavy and continuous torrential rains pounded the area prior to the incident, loosening the immense mountain of refuse. The unstable waste structure ultimately gave way early in the morning, burying everything in its path under a massive wave of rubbish.
As a result of this sudden landslide of refuse, at least thirty people lost their lives. Authorities also reported that six individuals sustained injuries during the fatal catastrophe. Rescue operations were launched to locate victims trapped beneath the heavy debris left behind by the collapsed landfill site.
This fatal accident at Dar Es Salam highlights the dangerous impact of extreme rainfall on major waste facilities in urban centers. The tragedy has left the local community in shock as families come to terms with the severe casualties caused by the weekend torrential downpours.
